Campus Notes - South Windsor Students

SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — Here are some recent notable achievements for college students from South Windsor, as reported by readMedia Newswire.

Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic CT

• The Drama Society at Eastern Connecticut State University performed its first-ever children's theatre production on March 25 with a kid-friendly version of Shakespeare's "Hamlet." Originally adapted by playwright Kyra Baldwin, "Hamlet" (for kids) was directed by club president Lucy Shea. Two performances occurred for all-ages crowds in the Delmonte Studio Theatre of Eastern's Fine Arts Instructional Center.
  Among the cast and crew were two South Windsor residents: Hanna Madler, who majors in Accounting and Theatre and managed the costumes, and Megan O'Brien, who majors in Business Administration and Theatre and was the lighting designer.
• A group of history students from Eastern Connecticut State University took a week-long global field course (GFC) in the Middle East this March. The students visited sights throughout Israel, Jordan and the West Bank as they learned about the region's various conflicts and histories. Among the students was Sarah Brihan of South Windsor, who majors in Elementary Education and History.

Emerson College, Boston MA

• Four students from South Windsor have been named to Emerson College's Dean's List for the fall 2016 semester. The requirement to make the Dean's List is a grade point average of 3.7 or higher. The local honorees are: Madison Crichton, a Journalism major; Samantha Crichton, a Writing for Film and TV major; Allyson Floridia, a Writing Lit and Publishing BFA major; and Janii Yazon, a Writing, Lit and Publishing major.

Nichols College, Dudley MA

• Daniel Roberts, a Human Resource Management major from South Windsor, has achieved Dean's List for the fall 2016 term at Nichols College in Dudley, Mass. The Nichols College Dean's List recognizes students who have achieved high grades during a single semester. In order to be included in the Dean's List, a student must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.2 for at least 12 credit-hours and receive no grade below a C+ during the semester.

St. Lawrence University, Canton NY

• Milena Kozyra of South Windsor has been selected for inclusion on St. Lawrence University's Dean's List for academic achievement during the fall 2016 semester. Kozyra is a member of the Class of 2018 and is majoring in Economics. Kozyra attended Ethel Walker School. To be eligible for the Dean's List, a student must have completed at least four courses and have an academic average of 3.6 based on a 4.0 scale for the semester.

Stonehill College, Easton MA

• Erin Sicord of South Windsor, a member of the Class of 2020, has been named to the fall 2016 Dean's List at Stonehill College. Sicord is majoring in Psychology. To qualify for the Dean's List, students must have a semester grade point average of 3.50 or better and must have completed successfully all courses for which they were registered.

University of Hartford, West Hartford CT

• For elementary school children living in villages outside of New Delhi, India, learning in dim light and sweltering classrooms has become a way of life. With limited access to water and electricity, teachers often choose between holding classes in the hot, humid outdoors or using kerosene lamps indoors with their inherent fire and air quality risks. A group of students in the University of Hartford's College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture, led by sophomore civil engineering major Matthew Garneau of South Windsor , set out to improve this difficult learning environment by increasing the water and power supply in two local schools. This was Matthew's second trip to India during winter break, and his first leading the team as vice president of the University's Engineers Without Borders (EWB) chapter. Over the course of nearly two weeks, Matthew directed the team as it installed higher-powered water pumps and UPS' in two government primary schools in the villages of Rithoj and Raisena, located about an hour outside of New Delhi. Matthew, who has been running his own landscaping company for four years, oversaw local technicians and worked with translators to negotiate prices at local parts suppliers.

Western New England University, Springfield MA

• Adam Zimmerman of South Windsor graduated Summa Cum Laude from Western New England University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration-Accounting & Finance on February 15, 2017.
