Former South Windsor Mayor Cary Prague Dies at 58

Prague was also a current member of the town council.

Former South Windsor Mayor, and current council member, Cary Prague died at home Sunday surrounded by his family. He was 58.

Prague was diagnosed with brain cancer a few years ago and endured multiple surgeries, while also undergoing radiation treatment and chemotherapy, according to current South Windsor Mayor M. Saud Anwar.

“While going through all of these therapies, he did not reduce his workload or commitment to South Windsor,” Anwar said in an email. “He contributed to the decision-making process, participated in discussions and continued to be actively involved, despite his illness.”

In a 2013 interview, Prague told the Hartford Courant that he tried to shrug off his mortality and not think about his brain cancer, which returned twice following operations to remove it.

“It’s just my lifestyle,” he told the Courant. “It always has been, and I try not to let the tumor get in the way.”

Anwar said Prague and his wife Karen moved to South Windsor about 36 years ago to raise their family.

Prague served as mayor from September 2008 to November 2009 and was also a member of the Board of Education along with various boards, commissions and committees.

Prague was the founder, treasurer and executive member of the South Windsor Community Foundation and was a valued member of the South Windsor Chamber of Commerce.

He was also an active member of the South Windsor Rotary Club, and was the recipient of the Rotary’s highest honor, the Paul Harrison Award, according to Anwar.

“Cary has touched everyone in the town of South Windsor with his work,” Anwar said. “His commitment and passion was an inspiration to those who served beside him. We have all benefited from his presence. He will be missed and remembered for his service, intelligence and personality.

“On behalf of our town, I extend our deepest condolences to Cary’s wife, Karen and his children, David, Jeff and Alex. We join his family and friends in grieving the loss of a very good man. In the history of South Windsor, the name Cary Prague will forever be honored and remembered.”
