Girls Soccer: South Windsor Suffers Tough Loss to Glastonbury

The South Windsor High girls soccer team played better the second time it faced  Glastonbury High this season.

It just didn’t win.

The Tomahawks defeated the Bobcats 1-0 on Friday afternoon in South Windsor.

“We played well, we played hard; we did a heck of a lot better than the 1st time around,” South Windsor head coach Ed Duclosa said, noting that the Bobcats fell to Glastonbury - the defending state Class LL champion - 3-0 on Oct. 1 in Glastonbury. “We handled pressure better. They’re a very, very skilled team. They come at you with a lot of skilled players. They’re tough. It’s no surprise that they are 15-0.”

After a scoreless first half, Glastonbury’s Kristen Dragotta scored the game’s lone goal in the 42nd minute.

Duclos said that his defense was outstanding, with backs Lauren Dansereau, Tori Russo, Julia Galvin, Auna Harvey and defensive midfielder Kat Comeau all performing well. Bobcats goalkeeper Hanna Basile had seven saves.

To give an idea of how much more evenly matched the two teams were in their second meeting, consider that Glastonbury goalkeeper Ciara Boucher was called on to make six saves Friday. She only had to make two saves in the Oct. 1 victory in Glastonbury.

The victory not only preserved the Tomahawks perfect season, it also locked up the CCC North title, as the Bobcats fell to 13-2 (11-2).

“We went into the game and we fully expected to win,” Duclos said. “We were not playing for the tie; we were playing for the win. We were hoping to share the title with them as co-champions. That didn’t happen, and it’s extremely disappointing.”

Still, with that said, Duclos said that he was proud of the way his team played and the improvement it has shown in the last four weeks.

“We played them on Oct. 1 and on Oct. 26, and we have shown tremendous growth,” Duclos said. “These kids are working so hard. … We figured out we’re going to see them again. They’ll be the No. 1 seed. Maybe we’ll see them again in the state championship game. That’s fine with us.

“I absolutely love this team. They work extremely hard and they give everything they’ve got. They own this team. They don’t rent this team. It’s a wonderful group that I love being involved with.”
