SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — Here are some recent notable accomplishments by local college students, as provided by readMedia Newswire. More great feats will be noted in the coming weeks.
Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic CT
- Zach Donahue of South Windsor was named to the All-Little East Conference baseball second team for the second time in as many seasons, and LEC Player-of-the-Week on March 26. He is batting .293 with 54 hits with a team-high of 47 runs scored and seven triples. The shortstop leads the LEC in assists with 129, and is second in runs and triples. Batted .338 in the Little East regular season with 18 runs, 16 RBI and 47 assists in 16 games.
- Senior outfielder Taylor Darby of South Windsor was named to the Little East Conference softball second team. A regular in the lineup in each of her three seasons, she has started games at all three outfield positions and brings a 14-game hitting streak (longest streak by a player this year) into the NCAA tournament, having hit safely in 19 of her last 20. On her current hitting streak, she is batting .391 (18-for-26) with 11 runs, eight RBI and nine stolen bases. In 35 games this year, Darby is batting .311 (fourth among regulars) with 10 stolen bases (second-most on the team) on 12 attempts, 20 runs scored and 14 RBI. In the outfield, she has made one error in 30 chances (.967).

- It is with great pleasure that Southern New Hampshire University congratulates four students from South Windsor on being named to the winter 2023 President's List. They are Yaroslav Shuter, Neel Tucker, Tiffany Gorham and Nicole Paquette. The winter terms run from January to May. Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.700 and above for the reporting term are named to the President's List. Full-time status is achieved by earning 12 credits over each 16-week term or paired 8-week terms grouped in fall, winter/spring, and summer.
Western New England University, Springfield MA
- The Western New England University chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma National Honor Society welcomed 35 students at the University's annual induction ceremony on April 27 in the University Commons. Beta Gamma Sigma is a national honor society for business majors at schools accredited by AACSB International, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Students are selected from the top 7% of juniors, top 10% of seniors, and top 20% of graduate students. Candidates must have completed two semesters of study at Western New England University. Charles Bemis of South Windsor is working toward a business degree. Leah Cunha of South Windsor is working toward a BSBA in entrepreneurship.
- Joshua Brozowski of South Windsor was welcomed into Alpha Phi Sigma National Honor Society on May 2 at the Western New England University chapter's annual induction ceremony. Alpha Phi Sigma is the national criminal justice honor society. The mission of the society is to promote critical thinking, rigorous scholarship, and lifelong learning to keep abreast of the advances in scientific research; to elevate the ethical standards of the criminal justice profession; and to sustain in the public mind the benefit and necessity of education and professional training. Brozowski is working toward a BS in criminal justice.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester MA

- At WPI, all undergraduates are required to complete a research-driven, professional-level project that applies science and technology that addresses an important societal need or issue. About two-thirds of students complete a project at one of the university's 50-plus off-campus project centers, which are located around the world. A signature element of the innovative undergraduate experience at WPI, the project-based curriculum offers students the opportunity to apply their scientific and technical knowledge to develop thoughtful solutions to real problems that affect the quality of people's lives-and make a difference before they graduate. Jia Yazon of South Windsor, class of 2024 majoring in chemical engineering and professional writing, completed a project titled Improving Waste Managment in Baan Thung Noi. Mohamed Barry of South Windsor, class of 2024, majoring in computer science, completed a project titled Communication for the Caribbean Climate Adaptation Network.
