MVP - Always a fun topic on who deserves the award in each league. Last year the conversation was on who should win the AL MVP Cabrera or Trout. (more on that later). I just finished reading a book called MVP written my Robert Cohen. This book goes back through each AL and NL season from 1900 to 2009 and attempts to analyzed who should be the MVP for each league for each season. I would rate the book a 2.5 out of a 5. The pros - It is complete. Any player with any positive effect on their team is included. There are chapters that talked about the biggest "errors" in various MVP races. Overall it is a good overview of the history of the MVP and early awards. The cons. While I love the numbers there might actually be too many. There could have been less mention about minor players especially for the more recent years. Also I disagreed with the logical of many of the picks. Also the logic seemed to changed from year to year. I read the book from start to finish. Maybe the book with be better as a reference in which you just read about a year or two when the topic came up. (ie who should have won the AL MVP in 1986). Finally a few of my personal thoughts on the MVP. I think the award should go to the player with the most outstanding numbers regardless of the circumstance. That is even if their team finished in last place, they played in a place like Colorado or they were part of a stacked lineup. I know I am discounting the word 'Valuable" but I have seen too many definitions of it in a baseball context for it to make any sense. I don't object to writers picking players from just winning teams, I just don't agree with it. I think position players should be picked over pitchers but in some instances I would have voted for pitchers as the MVP. I am a big fan of Sabermetrics and have been reading Bill James for over 30 years so I understand the argument for Trout over Cabrera for MVP. That being said I would have voted for Cabrera. I would always voted for a Triple Crown winner even if their team finished last and or they played in a band box. For example voting for Andre Dawson in 1987 made sense to me. What are your thoughts about the MVP award?
