SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — Obituary, Steven Leslie Vigurs, October 21, 1956 – October 25, 2019:

Steven Vigurs, a resident of South Windsor since 1984, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family and four-legged children, after a battle with kidney cancer.

Born in Staten Island, NY, Steven was the son of Richard and Helga (Stockmarr) Vigurs and a direct descendant of governor William Bradford of Plymouth and of the Earl of Eglinton in Scotland.

He grew up in West Hartford, CT, graduated from Conard High School in 1974 and proudly served his country as a United States Marine Staff Sergeant. He later worked in Project Management and owned his own construction company, especially enjoying the time spent working with his sons. In 2011, he graduated from Manchester CC, magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa.

A lifelong New York Yankees fan, he was also an accomplished umpire. He founded the Northeast Umpires Academy and trained hundreds of amateur umpires. He was Head trainer for the Hartford and the Nutmeg Chapters of the CT Board of Approved Baseball Umpires, and a founding member of the umpire organization SEBU. He loved woodworking, gardening and cooking.

He is survived by his beloved wife Martha of 32 years, his three sons, Jonathan of Simsbury, CT, Joseph of Las Vegas, NV and Jeffrey of Boston, MA and his granddaughter Kaylyn. He leaves two sisters, a brother, a niece and four nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Eric.

A graveside service will be held at Old South Windsor Cemetery on 993 Main Street at 2:30pm, Saturday, Nov 2nd, followed by a celebration of his life at Lena’s Restaurant.
