A Peddler's Life Reviewed

A historian and curator of mechanical arts at Old Sturbridge Village will bring the world of old time peddlers back to life Oct. 12.

Tom Kelleher, historian and curator of mechanical arts at Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, will bring the world of a 19th-century peddler to life at the Oct. 12 program of the South Windsor Historical Society.


In the 1800s, traveling salesmen brought goods from around the world along with news, stories and conversation to farm families who were not instantly tied to the outside world. Kelleher will recreate their role at Wood Memorial Library, 773 Main St., South Windsor, at 7 p.m. Recommended admission is $5 per person ($3 for members of the historical society or library). Refreshments will be served.


Kelleher whose previous history based programs here have been very popular. He has worked as a costumed historical interpreter, trainer for the cooper shop, supervisor of the mills, coordinator of historic trades, research historian, and program coordinator for Old Sturbridge Village. Tom has researched dozens of historic characters and programs, which he has presented at museums, schools, and historical societies around the country. His writings on technology, history, historical drama and other museum-related topics have been published in several journals, books and magazines.
