Picture South Windsor - Then And Now

SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — The next installment of our periodic informal series highlighting businesses from South Windsor's past takes us to page 176 of the 1990 South Windsor High School yearbook, The Centurion. On that page is the Bank of South Windsor, which started out with much promise but quickly became yet another financial institution swallowed up by larger corporations.

Bank of South Windsor was established on May 15, 1989 at 1695 Ellington Road. In 1991, it acquired the Bank of East Hartford, and added Vernon Bank a year later. However, within a few years, small community-based banks were beginning to disappear, and the bank merged into the New England Bank & Trust Co. on Aug. 14, 1998.

In 2004, the Ellington Road location became home to Webster Bank, which remains today. Here is a contemporary look at the building, taken last week by yours truly.
