In 2012, The League of American Bicyclists designated South Windsor a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community. Many factors went into this award, making South Windsor one of only two towns in the entire state to hold this distinction.

One of the many reasons South Windsor is considered a bicycle friendly community is their leadership in incorporating bicycle education in their elementary schools, namely in the 4th grade. For the last 3 years, elementary schools have taken turns participating in bike education program, instructed by League Certified Instructors, provided by the statewide organization Bike Walk Connecticut. Next year, this program will be part of the curriculum, and all 5 schools will enjoy the benefits of being educated on the proper way to safely enjoy riding their bikes.

This program teaches students everything from the parts of the bicycle, reading and understanding street signs, safety, and many other keys of becoming a lifelong safe cyclist. PE teachers in all the schools have been trained to assist certified instructors and supervise the children as they learn. 4th graders have a wide variety of experience with riding bikes, from beginning riders with little or no experience to advance riders.

The program has received support from the Board of Education, Parks and Recreation and SW Police Department, as well as South Windsor Walk and Wheel Ways, supplying many of the volunteers as well as League Certified Instructors. Students have a great time while learning skills that will last them a life time of riding safely.
