Retired South Windsor Fire Chief Passes Away

He served the department for more than five decades, including 15 years as chief.

SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — Retired South Windsor Fire Chief William Lanning passed away Monday morning. He was 80.

The South Windsor Fire Department shared the news of Lanning's passing on its Facebook page.

Lanning joined the department in 1962 and worked his way up the ranks to lieutenant, captain, deputy chief and assistant. He was named chief in 1987 and served in that role for 15 years before retiring.

After stepping down as chief, Lanning continued as an active member of Company 6 until retiring from the department in 2012.

For more than 30 years, he did double duty as the town's fire marshal.

Calling hours will be Saturday, Feb. 25 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Samsel-Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road in South Windsor. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Feb. 26 at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
