South Windsor Obituary: Joan Smith, 95

Condolences to her family and friends.

Joan A. (Griffiths) Smith, 95, of South Windsor, beloved wife of the late Reuben Smith, died peacefully on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at the Westside Care Center in Manchester.

Joan was born in Hemsworth, England on August 4, 1922, daughter of the late Joseph and Janet Morris Griffiths. She immigrated with her family to Canada in 1957, where she spent five years before immigrating to the U.S. to be with her sister in 1962. She lived in Hartford and moved to South Windsor in 1985.

A devout Catholic woman, Joan was a communicant of St. Margaret Mary Church in South Windsor. She worked in food service for Phoenix Insurance and then the Travelers for many years. She enjoyed ball room dancing with her husband and parties.

Joan’s family was the most important part of her life. A kind, caring and devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother she will be dearly missed.

She leaves her children, John A. Smith and his wife Marge of Canada, Carole Snyder and her husband Harold of South Windsor, Christine Kozlowski and her husband Frank of South Windsor, and Stephen Smith and his wife Mary of South Windsor; 8 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her siblings, Jack, Joyce, Mary, Margaret, and Joe.

Her family will receive friends on Friday, June 8, 2018, from 5-7 p.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2018, 10 a.m., at St. Margaret Mary Church, 80 Hayes Rd., South Windsor (please meet directly at the church). Burial will follow at Wapping Cemetery in South Windsor.

In lieu of flowers memorial donation may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN.
