
Thomas Michael Carroll, 51, of San Francisco, California, formerly of South Windsor, died unexpectedly on November 22, 2017. He was the son of William and Diane (Basney) Carroll of South Windsor.
He was born in Hartford on January 11, 1966. Tom was raised and educated in South Windsor and graduated from South Windsor High School in 1984 as the class salutatorian. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania on an ROTC scholarship as a mechanical engineer and was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.
Tom was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army. He spent most of his Army career stationed in West Germany serving with the 10th Engineer Battalion of the 3rd Infantry Division. He was also assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division in Iraq during Operation Desert Storm. He was honorably discharged from the Army with the rank of Captain. He received multiple medals including the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with 2 Oak leaf clusters, and the Army Parachutist Badge. He later worked as a sales engineer.

Tom was a talented athlete. He ran cross country and track in high school and swam competitively for the South Windsor Swim Club. He played youth baseball, basketball, and football. Tom was an expert skier and an avid Patriots and Red Sox fan.
He was a loyal friend and loved to travel around the country and the world, visiting his family and many friends often. He was a communicant of Saint Vincent de Paul Church in San Francisco and an active member in their Young Adult Group, where he met his wife, Susan Gordon Carroll.

Besides his parents and wife Susan, Tom leaves their two beautiful children Natalie and Conor of San Francisco. He also leaves his brother William Carroll, Jr, his wife Juanita, and their daughters, Molly and Bridget of South Windsor; his sister Susan Brown, her husband Randall, and their sons, Ryan and Kyle of Milford, Pennsylvania; and his sister Betsy Metzger, her husband John, and their daughters Katie, Holly, Heidi, and Kelly of Redmond, Washington. He also leaves numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins as well as many close friends. Tom was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial is being held directly at St. Margaret Mary Church, 80 Hayes Road, South Windsor, on Friday, December 15, 2017 at 10 am. Burial will be private at his family’s request.
