South Windsor Police Warn of 'Grandparent' Phone Scam

A resident recently received a call from a man claiming to be her grandson, saying he was in a Delaware courthouse and needed $2,200 bail.

The “Grandparent” phone scam:

A local resident received a call (Friday) from a male claiming to be her grandson, stating he was in a Delaware courthouse and needed $2,200 bail. The woman realized this was a scam and didn’t provide any information, she hung up and located her grandson at work.

The call originated from Canada, not Delaware, in the 514 area code where we’ve seen previous, similar scams trace back to. The callers will sometimes even give a legitimate jail phone number as a call back number.

As always, don’t give out personal information, bank information or credit card information. Never use Western Union or “Green Dot” cards to pay off suspicious transactions and if you have a concern, independently verify the facts or contact the police for assistance.
