South Windsor Wrestlers Excel at Rodney Smith Classic

EAST WINDSOR, CT — Wrestlers from South Windsor High School had a successful day on the mat Saturday at the annual Rodney Smith Classic tournament at East Windsor High School.

South Windsor placed second to Montville in team competition. Four Bobcats won their individual weight classes, while four others were placewinners in the 14-school event named for Smith, bronze medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona and captain of the 1996 U.S. Olympic wrestling squad.

Smith was in attendance and presented awards to the champions. Also on hand was his close friend Jim Olson, the former longtime East Windsor coach who started the tournament in 1998 as the East Windsor Invitational, and shortly renamed it in honor of Smith.
