Verizon Seeks To Add 12 Antennas To South Windsor Tower

SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — Verizon Wireless is seeking state approval to add 12 antennas and new ground equipment to an existing telecommunications tower on Sullivan Avenue.

The company filed a request with the Connecticut Siting Council to share the 150-foot tower at 124 Sullivan Ave.

The tower is owned by Marcus Communications, while the property belongs to the town. South Windsor’s Planning and Zoning Commission approved the structure in 2023 as an emergency services telecommunications tower.

Verizon’s plans call for 12 antennas and three remote radio heads to be mounted 127 feet above the ground. The company also wants to place an equipment and battery cabinet and a diesel-powered generator on a concrete pad inside the existing fenced compound.

A structural analysis submitted with the application found that the tower and its foundation could support the proposed equipment.

Verizon said using the existing structure would have little effect on the surrounding area. The company described the added equipment’s visual impact as “insignificant” and said the site would only generate occasional traffic for maintenance visits once construction is complete.

A radio-frequency study included with the filing found that the modified facility would operate within Federal Communications Commission exposure limits.

The Siting Council notified Mayor Craig Zimmerman of the request Aug. 3. The deadline to submit written comments was Monday.

The council said it will consider the proposal at a future public meeting. As of Tuesday, the application remained listed among the council’s pending tower-sharing requests.
