Walden Behavioral Care Plans Workshop On Treatment of Binge Eating Disorder

Walden's Chief Medical Officer to Explain Integrative Approach to Treating Binge Eating Disorder

Walden Behavioral Care announced that it will sponsor a free workshop, “Binge Eating Disorder: An Integrative Approach for Lasting Results,” from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, April 11, 2015 at Longview Place, 80 Hope Ave., Waltham.

Binge eating disorder was recognized as an eating disorder in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) for the first time last year, but Walden has been treating the disorder since 2007. It is the most common eating disorder, affecting about 2.8 percent of adult Americans.

James M. Greenblatt, M.D., Chief Medical Officer at Walden Behavioral Care, will explain the need for an integrative approach that includes group and individual therapy, nutritional counseling and medical treatment.

“The recent approval of Vyvanse is bringing much-needed attention, but also controversy, to the treatment of binge-eating disorder,” Dr. Greenblatt said. “No single approach is appropriate for every patient and an integrative approach combining a variety of treatments is most effective.”

While binge eating disorder is widespread, many people with the disorder are not seeking treatment and, among those who are, many are not receiving the specialized treatment typically needed to recover, according to Dr. Greenblatt.
