Current State Senator the past 4 years. Served as Chairman of Woodstock’s Planning & Zoning Commission for 15 years.

Why are you seeking this office?

To continue the collaboratove and successful work I have been doing for the people and communities of the 35th Senate District.

What do you believe is the No. 1 issue facing Connecticut, and how do you plan to address it?

Affordbility

Energy costs have been soaring in Connecticut. What are your plans to help address this issue?

I have been a legislative leader fighting on this issue. I worked to get electric bills transparent so people would know what they are being charged and taxed to pay. I stopped several new taxes from being put on top of current taxes on energy bills and I got some of the old taxes removed. I was successful in changing how Connecticut decides about big, long-term energy purchase agreements so that any financial burden is lessened. I stood strong against the utility companies. I helped get the Public Utilities Regulatory Agency reformed and I advocate to reform PURA even more so that ratepayers are always first in decision-making, not big corporations.

Affordability has been a major topic across the country and here in Connecticut. How do you plan to address this issue?

I have a strong track record as a State Senator: cut income taxes, expanded tax exemptions for seniors’ retirement accounts, created child and caregiver tax credits, created a new veterans’ property tax exemption, led the effort the rein in high prescription drug prices, got more municipal and school funding to help lessen property tax increases, and got passed an early childhood education fund to help working families afford pre-school and daycare, and more. I have continued working on the many aspects of my affordability proposals, such as further cut income taxes, cut sales taxes, suspend the diesel and gas taxes, expand the child tax credit to help more middle class families, phase out taxes on retirement accounts and pensions, create more homeowner and renter tax credits, create education tax credits for work force development, and more. I also am working to lower property taxes by further funding town education and non-education services, and get rid of expensive unfunded state mandates.

What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?

I was an elected town leader for 15 years. (Chairman of Woodstock’s Planning & Zoning Commission). I serve on important legislative committees: Appropriations, Public Health, Public Safety, Planning and Development, and Veterans. I am the the Republican Senate Leader on the last 2 committees listed. I am the Co-Chair of the Rural Caucus. I am a doctor, father, son, doctor, and community leader who has many life experiences that guide me in informed, common sense ways and help me relate to my constituents. I am Past President, Past House Speaker, and Past Council Chair of the CT State Medical Society.

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about yourself and your positions?

I am a doctor (cancer, blood disorders, transfusion medicine, and palliative/hospice specialist) who has been caring for people for more than 33 years.
