Police Dog Nabs Fleeing Suspected Drunken Driver After Crash At Stafford Construction Site: State Police

STAFFORD, CT — A suspected drunken driver slammed into a construction site on Friday night in Stafford and then ran from the scene, state police said.

The incident took place Friday at 8:20 p.m., state police said.

According to crash and arrest reports, a 29-year-old man from Ware, MA, was driving a white Ford F350 pickup truck north on East Road and ran over traffic barrels at a construction site, just south of the Hydeville Road intersection.

The truck then hit a cement barrier inside the construction zone and wound up with "disabling damage," according to a crash report. The driver, identified as Deven Mercier, then fled the accident scene on foot and was located by a police dog hiding behind Still Water Grill on the 300 block of East Street, according to a crash report.

He was charged with evading responsibility, driving under the influence, interfering with police and failure to drive in the proper lane, according to an arrest report. He posted a $15,000 bond is is due in Rockville Superior Court on July 15, records show.
