Suspect Found In Union Swamp By CT State Police Dog Formally Charged

UNION, CT — A suspect in a police pursuit that began in Massachusetts and ended with a suspect being caught in a swamp in Union by a Connecticut State Police canine has been formally charged.

The situation unraveled at 10:25 p.m. Monday, when Connecticut state troopers were advised that Massachusetts State Police were in pursuit of a Gray BMW with New York plates.

MSP troopers reported they had successfully deployed stop sticks, but terminated their pursuit at the I-84 westbound Massachusetts-Connecticut, according to an incident report.

Troopers in Connecticut then conducted patrol checks of the area and discovered the BMW in the area of the Union weigh station with extensive damage, according to an incident report.

It had crashed.

One suspect was located near the vehicle with serious injuries and EMS personnel were summoned to the scene, state police said.

An on-scene witnesses reported seeing another occupant fleeing the area on foot and K-9 Viper and Trooper Kyle Kaelberer arrived and began a tracking detail into a thick swampy area near Exit 73, according to an incident report.

Viper located and apprehended the second suspect with the assistance of additional troopers on scene, according to an incident report.

Both suspects were transported to Hartford Hospital by ambulance and charges are pending, state police said.

On Wednesday, state police said Elijah Baugh, 23, of Willard, NC, was charged after his hospital transport with the sale of a narcotic substance, organized retail theft, third-degree larceny and interfering with police. His bond was set at $100,000.
