More Details Released In School Bus Vs. Car Crash In Stamford: PD

STAMFORD, CT — The 82-year-old driver of a car that collided with a school bus in Stamford Thursday afternoon suffered serious injuries in the crash, and her condition is unknown, according to Stamford police.

She needed to be extricated - using the "Jaws of Life" - from the vehicle by emergency personnel and was treated at Stamford Hospital for the unknown injuries, according to officials with the Belltown Volunteer Fire Department and a post on the police department's Facebook page.

The crash was reported at 12:21 p.m., and it occurred in the 700 block of Newfield Avenue, and also took out a telephone pole.

"The bus was occupied by one high school aged student, along with the driver. Both were transported by EMS to Stamford Hospital with minor injuries.

"The Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad is asking anyone who may have seen the collision, or has any information, please call (203) 977-4712," police officials wrote. "The collision is being investigated by Sgt. Jeffrey Booth and Ofc. Lindsey Yanicky."

Extricating the driver of the car took close to 30 minutes, officials wrote on the fire department's Twitter page.

"Belltown and Stamford crews utilized hydraulic rescue tools commonly known as the 'Jaws of Life' to begin freeing the trapped occupant," officials stated. This was a complex extrication and several tools and techniques were utilized including removal of doors, lifting of the front dashboard, cutting of the brake pedal and removal of the car's roof."

As a result of the crash, Newfield Avenue was temporarily closed for the investigation and clean up between Case Road and Sanford Lane, according to Stamford police. The road has since been reopened.
