2-Alarm Blaze Significantly Damages House On Stamford Estate

Crews spent hours trying to extinguish flames at an unoccupied home on Erskine Road in North Stamford Saturday night into Sunday.

STAMFORD, CT — Multiple fire units from Stamford using equipment from surrounding towns spent hours putting out flames at an unoccupied house on a large estate on Erskine Road Saturday night into Sunday morning.

According to the Stamford Fire Department, the combined 911 center received a call at 6:50 p.m. Saturday about heavy smoke, "possibly a large open burn," in the area of 579 Erskine Road in North Stamford.

A unit from the Long Ridge Fire Department arrived on the scene first and found a large unoccupied house with heavy fire in the attic and roof area, SFD Public Information Officer Philip Hayes said.

Engine and ladder companies from the SFD, Long Ridge, and Belltown Fire Department responded to the fire, fire officials said. Due to the amount of water needed to extinguish the flames, a tanker shuttle brought in fire department tankers from Turn of River, Long Ridge, Round Hill, Noroton Heights, New Canaan, Darien, Cos Cob, Banksville, and Pound Ridge, N.Y.

The majority of the fire was fought from the exterior of the house due to safety concerns. No injuries were reported during the fire, Hayes said. Crews stayed on scene until about 2:30 a.m. to extinguish "many hot spots" but they returned Sunday morning to work on additional problem areas.
