2 Men Dead Of Suspected Overdoses In South End: Police

STAMFORD, CT — Police said they are investigating the deaths of two men who were found unresponsive in a car in the South End of Stamford on Aug. 30 as overdoses.

Officers responded to a parked car at Woodland Avenue and Pacific Street around 3:45 a.m. Monday after receiving a call about two men in their late 30s who "looked as if they were having difficulties in a vehicle," according to Capt. Richard Conklin of the Stamford Police Department.

Officers found the men inside the car and immediately began administering CPR and narcan, a nasal spray that can quickly reverse the side effects of an overdose, Conklin said. The men were taken to Stamford Hospital where they were pronounced dead.

In July, the SPD issued a public health alert, citing an increase in fatal drug overdoses around the country and locally in Stamford.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020 saw an approximate 29 percent increase in overdose deaths nationwide — about 93,000-plus total. Data collected by the CDC shows that the synthetic opioid fentanyl and its derivative carfentanyl are significant contributors to these deaths.

Conklin said that in 2021, overdoses appear to be rising over last year, although an exact number won't be known until the year is over and toxicology reports come back.
