5 Students From Stamford Awarded Brown Harris Stevens Scholarships

The inaugural recipients are pursuing degrees in everything from engineering and math to psychology and childhood education.​

STAMFORD, CT — Brown Harris Stevens Connecticut, in partnership with Person to Person, recently announced the inaugural scholarship recipients from the Brown Harris Stevens Scholarship Fund, and included are five students from Stamford.

Each year through an application process, 10 local Fairfield County students will receive $20,000 in funds to help them reach their higher education goals.

The inaugural recipients are pursuing degrees in everything from engineering and math to psychology and childhood education.

The students from Stamford are:

Kenneth Maeda

Maeda is freshman at The University of Connecticut who will be studying aerospace engineering.

Angel Uchupailla

Uchupailla is a freshman at the University of Connecticut who will be majoring in biology and minoring in business. During high school, Uchupailla was a student ambassador for Future 5, and was on the Westhill lacrosse, track and field, and soccer teams. He also has completed more than 150 hours of community service with Person to Person.

Laysha Lucero

Lucero is a junior in the UConn who is majoring in math. She has been on the Dean’s List and was a member of the Latin Club, Multicultural Club and Data Analytics Club.

Shania Blake

Blake is a senior at the Southern Connecticut State University and is majoring in early childhood education, and minoring in psychology, child, family and community studies. She has been awarded the Segal Americorps Education award.

An additional winner from Stamford chose to remain anonymous.

Other winners are Christian De Souza, from Greenwich; Raphael Benjamin, Alexandra Narcisse from Norwalk; and two anonymous winners from New Canaan and Norwalk.

"We want to congratulate all of the inaugural Brown Harris Stevens scholars on their hard-earned achievements. BHS is incredibly proud to offer our support to our local students as they continue their education journeys," said Christopher Halstead in a news release.

Halstead is the executive sales director for Brown Harris Stevens Connecticut.

"None of this would have been possible without Person-to-Person for their partnership in launching the Brown Harris Stevens Scholarship Fund and for all the important work they do uplifting our communities," Halstead added.

Person to Person CEO Nancy Coughlin said her organization, which is based in Darien, is grateful to have such a strong partner in Brown Harris Stevens.

"This scholarship makes college attainable for ten local talented and motivated students, and helps Person to Person reach our goal of offering close to 100 college scholarships each year. We congratulate the scholars and thank Brown Harris Stevens for this generous support," Coughlin said in a news release.
