AKA Sorority, Inc. Hosts Workshop at Norwalk High School

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Hosts College Workshop

Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Omicron Upsilon Omega chapter hosted a College Admissions Process (#CAP) workshop for students at Norwalk High School. Sorority member, Beverly Johnson-Murphy presented information on, “How to Select the Right College for You.” She discussed college options, types of institutions of higher education, and how to select a major. A panel discussion ensued with chapter president Lisa Bennett, sorority members, Lolita Jones, Melanie Turner, and Norwalk high school graduate Miles Turner. They shared information about their personal college experience, extracurriculars, and life on a college campus. Norwalk Community College Director of Financial Aid, Luis Guaman explained the fundamentals of Federal Aid, the financial aid process, completing the FAFSA, and types of student aid. The workshop ended with students participating in mock college interviews. This dialogue coaching process equipped students with the tools they need for a strong interview. Students submitted their college essay to sorority members a head of time for feedback. The event ended with pizza and gift card give-a-ways. Participants left with a binder of handouts on ways to make their college essay stand out, interview questions to prepare for, and scholarship websites.
