The Stamford community is joining forces to raise funds to build the Anthony Pellicci Pergola at Fairgate Farm, 129 Stillwater Avenue, in the historic West Side neighborhood for which Pellicci gave his impassioned support. Architects, contractors, and volunteers are donating the design and labor but need to raise $15,000 by March 1, 2018, for the building materials and resources to make this project come to life. Tax-free donations of any amount can be made at youcaring.com/fairgatefarm-1062945 where a video and details about this vital project can be found. “We are grateful to the individuals and businesses who want to make a difference and take pride in being part of a culture that promotes healthy living, especially for the people who need it most,” explains Charter Oak Communities chief executive officer Vincent Tufo. A fundraising kick-off event is planned on Thursday, February 1, 2018, at 5:00 pm at Pellicci’s Restaurant (96 Stillwater Ave). For information, email Fairgatefarm@gmail.com.
The Anthony Pellicci Pergola will be named in memory of this iconic community member who was dedicated to invigorating the neighborhood where his restaurant welcomed countless regulars, new arrivals and a few famous celebrities for seventy years. The Pellicci Pergola will provide a shaded grape arbor where children, seniors, and other local residents can mingle while enjoying the outdoors and appreciating the rich, cultural diversity of Stamford. Fairgate Farm, in the heart of Vita Health & Wellness District, harvests over two tons of fruits, herbs and vegetables annually which are donated back to the volunteers, inner-city families, and to hunger relief food pantries, soup kitchens, and homeless shelters.
The volunteer-powered, socially responsible Farm hosts gardening and health classes, seasonal events, cooking demonstrations, and an ongoing composting initiative that has diverted over 5,000 pounds of food waste from landfills. Fairgate Farm also provides nutrition and outreach programs to neighborhood children, youth, and adults. Through hands-on gardening and education opportunities, the Farm is building demand for fresh, organic produce as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle.
A Kick-Off reception to launch the first crowd-funded project at Fairgate Farm will be held on Thursday, February 1st, from 5 to 7 pm with light appetizers and drink. Fairgate Farm plans on hosting a community ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the new pergola during the Fairgate Farm Jam in spring 2018.
