Stamford Senior Center Hosts Grand Reopening

Restoring a vital resource for seniors throughout our region.

The Stamford Senior Center held a grand reopening last month, welcoming seniors back in person to the vital resource they have come to rely upon. On July 6th the center, located on the second floor of Stamford’s Government Center, opened its doors after more than a yearlong closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are thrilled to have the center open again, providing a safe space for seniors to rejoin their peers. During the pandemic we understood that many seniors experienced prolonged social isolation, so we took steps to keep them connected and cared for. It feels great to be able to do that again in person,” said Christina Crain, Stamford Senior Center Executive Director.

Indeed, throughout the pandemic the agency became a ‘senior center without walls’, delivering prepared meals and groceries to seniors who needed them, moving programs online and offering cheerful drive-through events. The efforts were a lifeline for the group, helping to alleviate loneliness and its negative health effects.

Seniors attending the reopening not only enjoyed reconnecting with friends, they also admired the renovations that took place while the center was closed. A newly remodeled café, new flooring and new furniture helped to make the reunion even more special.

“I’d rather be at the Senior Center than anywhere else, it is the most peaceful, safe, and welcoming place and I’m so happy to be back,” said Stamford Senior Center member Hilda Woodson.

Recognizing that seniors may have ongoing concerns regarding COVID-19, the Stamford Senior Center requires that anyone attending the center must be vaccinated. Additionally, the agency is offering an array of services that follow social distancing guidelines, and is providing fitness classes and learning opportunities both online and in-person indoors and outside.

“The Center has come to life again with friendship and laughter. We’re ecstatic to welcome our members back while remaining committed to keeping them healthy and safe,” said Crain.

The Stamford Senior Center offers affordable, life-enhancing opportunities and essential support for its nearly 900 members. Through a wide array of active and engaging programing, older adults in the greater Stamford area can be active and healthy in mind and body, while remaining connected to their community in a welcoming, safe and diverse environment.
