STAMFORD, CT — More than 40 firefighters from Stamford and Greenwich rescued a person who was trapped inside the cab of a dump truck for over an hour following a crash that also involved several passenger vehicles and a tractor-trailer on Interstate-95 Tuesday morning, fire officials said in a news release.
The crash closed I-95 northbound near Exit 8 in Stamford for about four hours. The roadway reopened around 2 p.m.
At 11 a.m., Stamford firefighters were dispatched on a report of a motor vehicle collision on I-95 northbound between Exits 8 and 9.
A dump truck sustained significant front-end damage after colliding with the rear of a tractor-trailer, fire officials said.
"The driver of the dump truck was pinned inside the cab of the truck, which resulted in an extensive and technical rescue effort to free him," the SFD said.
The Stamford Fire Department on Tuesday afternoon posted video of the scene on the social media platform X.
Due to the scope of the damage and the type of vehicles involved, the Greenwich Fire Department provided heavy rescue equipment, and two large rotator-style tow trucks were also requested.
The driver of the dump truck was freed after over an hour, the SFD said. The driver was conscious and alert throughout, and was later taken to Stamford Hospital for further evaluation.
Two occupants from the passenger vehicles involved in the crash sustained minor injuries, fire officials added. The were no injuries to responding fire personnel.
The crash is under investigation by the Connecticut State Police.
Multiple divisions from the SFD provided scene support, along with the GFD and Sound Beach Fire Department, Stamford Police Department, Stamford Emergency Medical Services, state police and local towing companies.
