STAMFORD, CT — A GoFundMe fundraiser has been launched to help the family of a Stamford man who was killed in a crash on I-95 on March 29.
Shyquinn Dix, 32, was the passenger in a 2001 Honda Prelude that was driven by Jawora Davidson, 37, of Bridgeport, who was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs and failure to drive in a proper lane.
The crash occurred at approximately 12:45 a.m. on March 29 on I-95 Southbound near Exit 6 in Stamford.
Citing a preliminary investigation, Connecticut State Police said Davidson lost control of the vehicle for an unknown reason and went into the right shoulder and then veered to the left and crossed all three lanes of travel before colliding with the concrete jersey barrier located in the median shoulder.
The impact caused the Honda to come to a final resting place back in the center of the highway, state police said.
Another vehicle, a 2019 Ford Transit van that was traveling in the center lane, collided with the Honda in a head-on collision, state police said. Dix was pronounced dead at Stamford Hospital.
The fundraiser, which has raised over $9,900 as of Thursday morning, was created by Dix's cousin.
"Losing someone so dear is never easy, and we want to celebrate his life in a way that reflects the love and joy he brought to those around him. We are raising funds to help cover funeral expenses and related arrangements. The funds will go directly to Shyquinn's mom, providing her with peace of mind during this difficult time and allowing us to focus on celebrating his life and supporting each other as a family," the fundraiser's description says.
"Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a meaningful difference and help us create a service that truly honors his memory."
Dix, a standout basketball player, was featured in a "60 Minutes" segment in 2019 about T.R.U.E., (truthful, respectful, understanding and elevating to success) a German-style rehabilitation program at the Cheshire Correctional Institution.
After his release, Dix enrolled at the University of Maine at Presque Isle and starred on the basketball team there. Dix then played at Bryant & Stratton College after a short stint at UMPI, according to their website.
According to his obituary, Dix "had a passion for mentoring and uplifting others," and served as a basketball coach at numerous youth camps.
"Shyquinn was also the proud owner and operator of Greater Later Cleaning Service, demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to hard work," his obituary says. "Known for his vibrant personality, Shyquinn brought joy, laughter, and energy to every family gathering."
