Yankees Hall Of Famer Makes Surprise Appearance At Stamford Little League Opening Day

STAMFORD, CT — New York Yankees legend and Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera made a surprise appearance at opening day for Stamford Little League over the weekend, throwing out the first pitch and greeting those in attendance at Scalzi Park.

"What an unforgettable opening day for Stamford Little League, with Mariano Rivera, one of the greatest baseball players of all time, throwing out the first pitch! A special moment for our city and a great kickoff to the season!" Mayor Caroline Simmons posted on Facebook.

Rivera played 19 seasons for the Yankees and was a key cog in five World Series championships. Known for his cutter and dramatic entrance to Metallica's "Enter Sandman," Rivera notched an MLB record 652 saves in the regular season and 42 saves in the postseason. He was also a 13-time All-Star.

In 2019, Rivera became the first player in history to be unanimously elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
