STAMFORD, CT — One person died, and two others were taken to the hospital following a house fire that broke out in Stamford early Friday morning, according to fire officials.
Stamford Deputy Fire Chief Philip Hayes told Patch the victim's identity is currently being withheld due to an ongoing investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office.
"The Stamford Fire Department expresses its gratitude to all responders involved in swiftly addressing this incident and extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the victim," Stamford Deputy Fire Chief John Pritchard said in a news release.
The Stamford 911 Dispatch Center began receiving calls at 4:21 a.m. reporting a possible fire at a home in the 100 block of Woodmere Road. While en route, units were advised a person was still inside the home, Pritchard said.
The first engine arrived on scene at 4:26 a.m. and reported a working fire in a 1.5-story wood-frame home with heavy fire coming from the front of the structure.
Firefighters stretched a hoseline in the home while other crews began a search for victims, Pritchard said, noting units found "heavy fire" on the first floor immediately inside the front door.
By 4:35 a.m., the main body of the blaze was knocked down, Pritchard said.
"The initial crew, upon extinguishing the main body of the fire, discovered a male victim who did not survive," Pritchard said. "Three other residents of the house were able to escape prior to Fire Department arrival."
Two patients were taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment of injuries they sustained trying to rescue the other victim, Pritchard said. The fire was declared fully under control at 5:02 a.m.
The Stamford Fire Marshal Division and Stamford Police Department began an investigation into the cause and origin of the fire - a standard protocol, Pritchard said.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Arson Task Force were also called to the scene to assist with the investigation, and Eversource was called to secure utilities to the property.
