Shortly after 2 a.m. on May 10, New York State Troopers stopped a 2016 GMC Yukon eastbound on the New York State Thruway in Harrison, N.Y., on vehicle and traffic law violations, state police said.

While speaking with the driver, identified as Valdovinos-Gonzalez, Troopers detected signs of impairment and administered standard field sobriety tests, state police said.

Further investigation found three children under the age of 16 were in the vehicle, state police said.

In addition to the DWI charges, Valdovinos-Gonzalez was issued several tickets for vehicle and traffic law violations.

State police said Valdovinos-Gonzalez was released to a sober third party and is due in Harrison Town Court on May 26.

Leandra's Law became effective Dec. 18, 2009, and sets some of the toughest DWI provisions in the country, according to state police.
