On Thursday, May 14th, over one hundred people gathered in Stuart Yankell’s Legacy Gallery in North Stamford to celebrate and raise funds for the Stamford Garden Club’s civic projects at An Enchanted Garden Cocktail Gala. Two of the club’s most notable civic projects include:
· The School Lettuce Challenge, which will involve 950 Stamford elementary students this year and culminate with a recognition ceremony at the Government Center;
·Fort Stamford’s Goodbody Garden, which the Stamford Garden Club (SGC) has been caring for since 1975 and is the site of many summer weddings and gatherings. In 1999, The Goodbody Garden was accepted in the Smithsonian Archives of American Gardens.
“A highlight of the Gala,” said event chair, Phyllis Lodato-Suppa, “was Stuart Yankell’s sharing of the gallery’s history.” The Yankell Legacy Gallery is a world-class monumental structure built in 1910 by Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore. Over the century, several significant American artists have lived and worked on the property, including Mort Walker, creator of Beetle Bailey.
During the Gala, the gallery venue was changed into an “Enchanted Garden” by Designs by Lee Nursery & Garden Center, which provided truckloads of trees and plants.Many other local businesses provided in-kind food and drink, such as LaRocca’s Country Market, Val’s Wine & Spirits, GRATSI Wines, Captain Zig Craft Beer, Layla’s Falafel, Bella Charcuterie, and DiMare’s Bakery.
Guests were entertained by Project Music’s talented educators and immersed in a beautiful garden ambiance graciously created by Eden Farms, the event’s Grand Dogwood Sponsor. EXP Valet generously sponsored valet services to ensure smooth guest arrivals and departures, while high school students from Future 5 provided invaluable in-kind event support as part of an educational community service experience. Guests also enjoyed browsing an array of exceptional silent auction and raffle offerings, generously donated by local businesses throughout the community.
