STAMFORD, CT — Stamford Public Schools announced this week that 223 students in the SPS class of 2026 have earned the Connecticut Seal of Biliteracy during high school.
The Seal of Biliteracy was established by the State of Connecticut to recognize public high school graduates who have attained a level of proficiency in English and one or more other world languages.
To be eligible for the Seal of Biliteracy, students must complete all high school graduation requirements in English Language Arts as well as demonstrate proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing in a language other than English at a level comparable to "Intermediate Mid" on the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.
District-wide, 223 seniors earned the Seal of Biliteracy during high school:
Students earned the Seal of Biliteracy in 17 languages: Arabic, Dari, French, Georgian, Greek, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Telugu, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.
The State of Connecticut requires all public school students to earn at least one credit in a world language to graduate from high school, while most colleges and universities require a minimum of three years of high school study of the same world language, SPS said in an announcement.
The Connecticut Seal of Biliteracy designation appears on high school transcripts and diplomas, and students receive a medal to wear at graduation.
The SPS Seal of Biliteracy program is coordinated by Matt Gladstone at Stamford High School and Ann Herz at Westhill High School in collaboration with the World Language Departments at AITE, Stamford High, Westhill, and SPS Anchor.
