Stamford Students Complete SoundWaters Internship

The internship program is designed to provide students with work experience and leadership opportunities.

STAMFORD, CT — Four seniors from Stamford and Westhill high schools completed internships this spring at SoundWaters, an organization focused on hands-on climate science and environmental education.

Carolyn Careers, Tafsir Chowdhury, Jack Huntoon and Kayla Parker spent five weeks working at the SoundWaters Coastal Education Center at Cove Island Park in Stamford. Instead of attending traditional classes during the final weeks of their senior year, they participated in day-to-day operations at the center and on Long Island Sound.

The Stamford students were among a select group of high school interns who gained hands-on experience in environmental science.

Working alongside SoundWaters educators, the interns helped deliver science programs to more than 2,000 students, from preschool through middle school. Their work included leading hands-on experiments in classroom and laboratory settings and conducting fieldwork aboard boats on Holly Pond.

"It was my first experience working alongside professionals in an educational setting," said Huntoon in a news release. Hunton will attend Virginia Tech this fall. "It showed me the level of preparation that goes into creating meaningful learning experiences."

The SoundWaters High School Internship Program is designed to provide students with work experience and leadership opportunities.

"It is an opportunity for students to grow as leaders, educators and communicators," said SoundWaters Director of Education Christina Genz in a news release. "Our interns bring energy to everything they do. They take on real responsibility, connect with students in meaningful ways and leave with skills that extend far beyond the classroom."
