STAMFORD, CT — The Stamford Board of Education voted Tuesday evening to approve the appointment of Scott Clayton as assistant superintendent for secondary, effective immediately.
In his new role, Clayton will oversee middle schools, high schools, and adult and continuing education.
Specifically, Clayton will supervise and evaluate principals, collaborate with the Teaching & Learning Department to implement instructional practices, work with the chief financial officer and the superintendent to ensure equitable budgets and staffing at all school and program sites, and monitor and support efforts to ensure all students are achieving high academic standards.
"Scott brings a unique combination of instructional leadership, operational expertise, deep knowledge of Stamford Public Schools, and experience as a policy maker to this new role," Superintendent Dr. Adrian Talley said in an announcement.
"Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a commitment to student achievement, continuous improvement, and collaboration. His success as a principal, combined with his recent work leading districtwide data and systems initiatives, has prepared him well for this role," Talley added. "I look forward to partnering with him as we work to strengthen our schools and ensure every student is prepared for post-secondary success."
Clayton has more than 20 years of experience in educational leadership, including serving as principal of Scofield Magnet Middle School from 2012 to 2024.
During his tenure, the school was recognized for its teaching practices and student achievement by the New England League of Middle Schools, which named it a Spotlight School in 2015, 2018 and 2023, and by the Connecticut Association of Schools, which named it a finalist for Middle School of the Year in 2023.
In 2024, Clayton was named the district's director of student data and systems, reporting to the chief academic officer. In that role, he managed the district's data and Board of Education technology integration teams and helped develop and implement a new teacher evaluation system.
Before joining Scofield, Clayton served as assistant principal at Newtown High School in Sandy Hook, where he also was dean of students and a social studies teacher. He began his career as an eighth-grade U.S. history teacher at Rippowam Magnet Middle School.
Clayton earned a bachelor's degree in history from Western Connecticut State University, a master's degree in secondary education from the University of Bridgeport, a sixth-year certificate in educational administration and leadership from Sacred Heart University, and superintendent certification from Central Connecticut State University.
He is certified by the Connecticut State Department of Education as a superintendent, in intermediate administration or supervision, and in grades 4-12 history and social studies.
In addition to his work in education, Clayton served nearly eight years in the Connecticut Army National Guard. He also serves on the Bethel Board of Education and is the board's current chair.
