911 Callers Reported Lightning Struck Stamford Home, Ignited Fire: FD

STAMFORD, CT — Six residents and their pets were displaced following a house fire on Tuesday in the Springdale neighborhood of Stamford, according to fire officials.

Firefighters responded to a home in the 90 block of Knickerbocker Avenue at 11:58 a.m.

Emergency dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting that lightning struck a home, setting the roof on fire, the Stamford Fire Department said in a news release.

Arriving firefighters from Springdale Volunteer Engine 57 found visible fire extending from the roof of the three-and-a-half-story home, along with damage to the chimney consistent with storm activity, the SFD said.

Hoses were deployed to suppress the flames while rescuers searched the home for any occupants. One person was located unharmed in a basement apartment.

The fire was brought under control within 27 minutes and was confined to the attic, preventing extension into the remainder of the house, the SFD said. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

The house sustained moderate fire, smoke, and water damage. The American Red Cross was requested to assist the six displaced residents and their pets.

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Stamford Fire Marshal's Office.
