STAMFORD, CT — The Stamford Police Department on Wednesday morning announced an arrest in connection with a pedestrian crash from April that killed a 66-year-old woman.
John DeAngelis, 50, of Stamford, turned himself in at SPD headquarters on Tuesday on a warrant that charges him with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle and making an improper turn. He was released on a court-ordered written promise to appear in court on Aug. 18.
The incident occurred in the area of Strawberry Hill Avenue and Colonial Road at approximately 2:04 p.m. on April 25, police said.
A 2014 Toyota pickup truck was traveling southbound on Strawberry Hill Avenue when the driver, identified as DeAngelis, tried to turn left to go east on Colonial Road, police said.
Evelyn Aponte, a Stamford resident, was trying to cross southbound over Colonial Road in a marked crosswalk when she was struck by the pickup truck and knocked to the ground, police said.
Aponte was initially taken to Stamford Hospital in critical condition. She died from her injuries in the early morning hours of April 26.
A GoFundMe fundraiser created by Russell Pierre for Aponte's family was created shortly after the incident, and it has since raised over $10,000.
Pierre noted in the fundraiser's description that Aponte was walking home from a shift at work. He said she was "more than a colleague—she was family to so many of us."
Aponte's obituary says she was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, wife, relative, and friend.
"To the world, she was known as a loving and caring woman-but to her family, she was everything," her obituary said. "She was our hero."
