STAMFORD, CT — For the second straight year, the Stamford Police Department's Special Response Team (SRT) has won the CT SWAT Challenge.
Each year, the multi-day event brings together elite law enforcement and military teams from across the region to showcase their skills and participate in a tactical competition.
This year's event was held from Aug. 10-13 in East Granby and featured 23 teams from police departments and other agencies from New England.
"This outstanding achievement is a true reflection of their dedication, preparation, teamwork, skill, and commitment to excellence," the SPD said in a social media post. "We couldn't be prouder of our SRT for representing the Stamford Police Department at the highest level. Congratulations on going back-to-back!"
According to the SPD website, the SRT's primary mission is to "resolve high-risk incidents, with a minimal loss of human life."
Some of the incidents the specialized unit responds to include hostage situations, high-risk search and arrest warrants, barricaded suspects and other situations deemed appropriate by police administration.
Members of the SRT unit are carefully selected and undergo vigorous physical training and education, according to the SPD.
The SRT is on call 24/7 and is made up of officers from various units and divisions within the SPD.
