STAMFORD, CT — Police said they seized a stolen gun and fentanyl and arrested a 30-year-old man on Wednesday in Stamford following a joint investigation between the Bridgeport Police Department Task Force and the Stamford Police Department's Narcotics and Organized Crime Unit.
Joseph Humphrey, of Stamford, faces a litany of charges, including: criminal possession of a firearm; criminal possession of ammunition; illegal possession of a high-capacity magazine; theft of a firearm; illegal transfer of a firearm; unsafe storage of a firearm; possession of narcotics; possession of narcotics with intent to sell greater than 1 ounce; and operating a drug factory.
Bridgeport police were already familiar with Humphrey and began an investigation into him, according to Asst. Stamford Police Chief Richard Conklin.
Humphrey was released from prison five months ago after serving nearly 15 years for first-degree manslaughter related to a fatal shooting that occurred in Bridgeport in 2012, Conklin said.
Authorities secured search warrants for Humphrey's vehicle and his Stillwater Avenue apartment.
With help of personnel from the SPD Special Response Team, BPD Emergency Services Unit, BPD Task Force, SPD NOC, FBI Safe Streets, SPD K9 and the SPD Midnight Patrol Division, the search warrants were executed late Wednesday morning, police said.
A search of Humphrey's apartment found a Springfield Armory "XD-40" .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun, which was reported stolen out of Alabama in January 2024, Conklin said, noting the gun had a high-capacity magazine with 11 rounds. Additionally,40 caliber rounds and 9mm rounds were also recovered.
Detectives also seized 147 folds of fentanyl, 3.8 grams of loose fentanyl, 4.5 grams of crack cocaine, 2.2 grams of what's called pink "Tusi" powder cocaine, packaging material and a digital scale, police said. Humphrey was found to have a bag of crack cocaine
A 30 percent serious firearm offender cash bond application was reviewed and signed by a judge, but Humphrey was remanded to custody since he's on parole until 2031, Conklin explained.
