Community Center celebrates Reading Program with Stamford Schools
Each summer, local Center for Immigrant Opportunity hosts the program with elementary students from Stamford Public Schools.
Building One Community - The Center for Immigrant Opportunity recently wrapped up its 6th annual Summer Reading Program for elementary school families in the Stamford Public Schools system. The program significantly helps prevent the “summer slide” largely experienced by immigrant children and helps improve English Language skills for the coming school year.
This program is a unique activity for families. While many summer programs engage only youth participants, parents join their children side by side for the entire Summer Reading Program. Both generations of the family enjoy an integrated learning experience and practice English reading comprehension and speaking skills.
This program benefits parents as well as their children, as they learn to interact with teachers, are taught what is expected of their children in the classroom, and learn how to supplement those expectations at home. Stamford Public Schools staff develop the curriculum and train the volunteer facilitators who work directly with families during the program.

“We were thrilled that 55 children and their parents participated in the Summer Reading Program this year,” said Lorely Peche, Family & School Services Director at Building One Community. “The importance of parental involvement in their children’s education cannot be overstated. Research demonstrates the link between parent involvement at school and their children’s success.”
The Summer Reading Program is generously funded by Fairfield County’s Community Foundation, the Pitney Bowes Foundation, the Barat Foundation at Convent of the Sacred Heart, the Community Fund of Darien’s Youth Grant Program.
