STAMFORD, CT — Due to an alarming uptick in suicides around Stamford recently and with the holiday season all but here, police are urging residents to seek help.

According to Stamford Assistant Police Chief Richard Conklin, there have been three suicides in Stamford over the last week alone, bringing the total number of suicides to four this year.

In 2023, Stamford recorded two suicides for the entire year, and three in all of 2022, Conklin noted.

"I've been around for many years, and I can't remember three suicides in our city in one week. It's certainly alarming," Conklin told Patch Tuesday. "People who are depressed or lonely, the holidays tend to exacerbate or make it even feel worse for them."

Residents can reach out to the Stamford Police Department for assistance, Conklin said.

"We respond to a number of people who call and say they're feeling suicidal. We respond to that very rapidly," Conklin added.

Those who aren't comfortable contacting the police can utilize the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which connects people to free, skilled and judgment-free counselors who are available to provide compassionate support 24/7.

"We want to let people know to take inventory of their loved ones, friends and co-workers," Conklin said. "If they're feeling depressed or have any type of issues, oftentimes just that conversation will go a long way to assist them."
