Family nutrition workshop educates immigrants on healthy choices

The one-time workshop will be led by Hospital for Special Surgery nurse Gabriela Zea on March 7th at Building One Community

A one-time family nutrition workshop for immigrants will be held at Building One Community – The Center for Immigrant Opportunity (B1C) on Thursday, March 7th at 4:15 pm. Gabriela Zea, Clinic & Community Outreach Nurse at the Hospital for Special Surgery, will lead the conversation about family nutrition and provide attendees with tips on how to choose healthier foods for their families.

Understanding family nutrition is important for the immigrant community, especially for immigrants with children. Research shows that diet has an impact on children’s cognitive abilities. For low-income immigrant children, missing meals and/or eating food that is not nutritious can exacerbate the achievement gap that exists between them and their native born classmates.

Ms. Zea will return to B1C in May to teach a workshop about preventing osteoporosis and maintaining healthy and strong bones. She insists that a person is never too old to take steps to strengthen their bones. Building One Community and Ms. Zea encourage immigrants of all ages to attend both workshops, which are free and will take place at B1C’s location at 75 Selleck Street in Stamford.
