Trinity Catholic Advances To FCIAC Boys Basketball Semifinals

Crusaders will face Ridgefield in semifinals after a 62-56 win over Danbury; Stamford falls to Ridgefield, 50-46 and Westhill loses to Bassick,

Jason Boswell scored 23 points Saturday as Trinity Catholic advanced to the semifinals of the FCIAC boys basketball playoffs with a 62-56 victory over No. 7 seed Danbury.

Kevin Leumene added 13 points for the Crusaders, including seven in the third quarter when Trinity Catholic used an 8-0 run to break away from a 42-42 tie.

Boswell then added seven in the fourth quarter as Trinity Catholic (16-5) advanced to Tuesday's semifinal meeting against Ridgefield at 7:30 p.m. at Fairfield Warde.

Schadrac Casimir added 11 points for the Crusaders, who had built a 30-24 halftime lead.

T.J. Jackson scored 17 points to pace Danbury while Javonte Parker added 16 for the Hatters, who dropped to 12-9. DanyJoel Harris chipped in with 13 for the losers.

Jackson hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter, helping the Hatters grab a 16-15 lead.

In Saturday's first game,  Ridgefield avenged a loss to Stamford in last year's FCIAC quarterfinals by defeating the sixth-seeded Black Knights 50-46 at Fairfield Ludlowe.

Kurt Steidl scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the third-seeded Tigers (16-5) who lost lost to Stamford 39-31 in last year's playoff meeting

Jeff Racy added 12 points for Ridgefield, which outscored Stamford 13-7 in the third quarter to take a 33-28 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Tigers, who also avenged a 50-39 loss to Stamford in the regular season, built a 44-32 lead with two minutes remaining.

Barry Boderick scored 12 points and Shawn Padilla added 11 for the Black Knights, who will take a 12-9 record into the Class LL state tournament.

Boderick, who registered 16 points in the regular-season win over Ridgefield, was held to three points on Saturday until making three 3-pointers in the final two minutes.

In the final playoff game involving a Stamford team, Westhill fell to defending FCIAC champion Bassick, 72-59.

Chris Walters poured in 33 points for the Vikings, who saw the Lions pull away late, outscoring Westhill 29-20 over the final eight minutes. Bassick only led 41-39 after three quarters.

Tony Dobbinson added 14 points for Westhill, but no other player had more than four the Vikings.

Bassick's Demetrius Thomas nearly matched Walter with 27 points for the Lions, who built a 16-10 lead after the first quarter and led 28-25 at the intermission.

Devin Coleman added 19 points for Bassick, which will face No. 8 Bridgeport Central in the semifinals on Tuesday. The Hilltoppers shocked top seed St. Joseph 62-58 in Saturday's final quarterfinal contest.
