Ferry Service To New York City? Stamford Has Been Gauging Interest
An online survey was circulated to various businesses in the South End in recent weeks to get feedback, according to a mayoral spokesperson.

STAMFORD, CT — Stamford officials have been gauging interest on bringing ferry service to Stamford which would go to New York City.
But at this time, according to Lauren Meyer, a spokesperson for Mayor Caroline Simmons, the city has decided to hold off on seriously pursuing the idea at least for this year. The deadline to apply for federal grants for the current fiscal year is fast approaching in early September.
An online survey was circulated to various businesses in the South End in recent weeks to get feedback on bringing ferry service to Stamford, Meyer told Patch. The survey asked respondents what their mode of transportation is to work and how far their commute is.

It also asked respondents how frequently they'd use a ferry in Stamford, and what they'd use it for, whether it be to travel for personal or recreational activities, or to access other ferry systems or modes of transportation for business related activities.
Meyer stressed that the informal survey, which was due no later than Aug. 25, is a very preliminary step. Results will be reviewed internally, she said, noting that the broader community would be involved if the city pursues the endeavor more seriously in the future.

In July, the Biden Administration announced funding to help improve and expand ferry service in communities across the United States, as well as to accelerate the transition to zero emission transportation.
There are three grant programs — $209 million is available this fiscal year for states to ensure basic essential ferry service is provided to rural areas; $49 million is earmarked for electric or low-emitting ferries and the associated infrastructure that reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and $36.5 million is available to support existing passenger ferry service, establish new ferry service, and repair and modernize ferry boats, terminals and related facilities and equipment in urbanized areas.
In 2019, Gov. Ned Lamont mentioned a plan to bring ferry service to New York City out of Stamford and Bridgeport, according to Hearst.
The idea has been entertained before in Stamford, notably in 2013, the Stamford Advocate reported.
