Stamford Apartment Fire Displaces 9: UPDATE
Nine people were displaced following an apartment fire in the city's downtown area, according to the Stamford Fire Department.

STAMFORD, CT — Nine people were displaced following an apartment fire Tuesday morning in the city's downtown area, according to fire officials.
In a statement, Deputy Chief Tom Gloersen said firefighters were called to a multi-family residence on Greenwood Hill Street around 10 a.m. (To sign up for Stamford breaking news alerts and more, click here.)
When crews arrived, they found "heavy fire" on the second floor of the building, which had also extended into the third floor and attic space, Gloersen said.

Firefighters quickly searched the building for any occupants before working to extinguish the blaze, which was declared under control about 30 minutes later, however crews continued to locate and extinguish hidden fire in the building for about an hour after that, Gloersen said.
Twenty-six firefighters in total responded to the area, as well as Stamford police and EMS crews.

The American Red Cross also responded to the area and is helping five families who were displaced as a result of the fire. According to the organization, responders are providing assistance to meet the families' immediate needs.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Gloersen said.
Earlier in the day, firefighters from the Belltown Volunteer Fire Department said on Twitter they were responding to a "working fire" on Greenwood Hill Street.
