Hats off to Second Annual Summer Math Program
Immigrant Community Center partners with Stamford public elementary school for second annual Summer Math Program

AUGUST 2019, STAMFORD – Building One Community - The Center for Immigrant Opportunity (B1C), in collaboration with Roxbury Elementary School, successfully wrapped up its second annual Summer Math Program this week. The month-long Summer Math Program started as a pilot program last year created by then Rye Country Day School Senior and B1C volunteer, Charlotte Townley.
This year Ms. Townley and Sandra Peterkin, Roxbury’s Title I Math teacher, banded together to advance the program and engage all the attending students and volunteers. The program joined 29 local volunteers with 46 students from Stamford Public Schools, ranging from kindergarten-5th grade. Ms. Peterkin commented, “The turnout among the Roxbury families was simply wonderful. It is a joy to see the students so engaged in all the math games. My goal is to increase all students’ love of math and through this program, I feel we have done that and more – begin to develop future mathematicians!”
The primary focus for B1C & Roxbury’s Summer Math Program is to encourage students to explore math through entertaining, educational games with the overall goal to sharpen their problem-solving skills. Students are guided by trained volunteers and Roxbury school staff through grade-appropriate math games in a fun and challenging environment. The Summer Math Program runs for four weeks every August. Similarly, Building One Community kicks off summer with its 4 week Summer Reading Program held in July, geared towards preventing the summer slide in reading and comprehension.
