The Long Ridge School Hosts Indy SumoBot Tournament on February 9

Students from The Long Ridge School, Greenwich Country Day and Hackley School to Participate in Tournament from 10 am – 1 pm

The Long Ridge School will host the Indy SumoBot Tournament this Saturday, February 9 from 10 am – 1 pm, with students from The Long Ridge School (Stamford, CT), Greenwich Country Day (Greenwich, CT) and Hackley School (Tarrytown, NY) participating. Participating students will compete against each other with robots they built using the Lego Mindstorm platform. The tournament goal is for students to use creative programming and strategies they have learned to push their opponent’s robot out of a battle zone.

The Indy SumoBot League was created last school year (2017-2018) because local robotics teachers were looking for a fun way to compete outside of the Lego First League. Dan Lipin at Hackley School in Tarrytown proposed the idea and Carissa Lewis from The Long Ridge School and Tom Hart from Greenwich Country Day School have been involved since the beginning. The league is open to students in grades 3-9 and the competition philosophy is “Do your best, learn from your mistakes, learn from the successes of others and always try to improve your robot.”

The academic goal of the Indy SumoBot League is to give students at independent schools in the tri-state area an opportunity to improve their robot building, programming, and controlling skills in a fun and competitive way. All creations, programs and strategies are made available to all students involved with the competition so that they can learn from and improve upon each other’s work.
