ID Released Of Man Killed In Kayak Accident Near Stamford: UPDATE
Stamford fire officials said rough water conditions caused a couple's kayak to capsize over the weekend on Long island Sound.

STAMFORD, CT — A man who died Sunday after his kayak capsized on Long Island Sound near Stamford has been identified by the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. On Monday, DEEP identified the man as Arpi Oscar Castillo, 22, of Danbury.
According to DEEP, Castillo was fishing with his wife on a two-person kayak early Sunday afternoon when "strong winds and rough seas" caused them both to end up in the water.
In a release, Deputy Chief Eric Lorenz said Stamford firefighters responded to the area of Wallacks Drive in Stamford around noon for a report of "someone in a kayak in trouble." A woman was soon located, struggling in the water approximately 20 feet from the rocks behind a Wallacks Drive property.

"The woman, suffering the effects of hypothermia, advised her husband was still unaccounted for and provided a description and his last known location in the water," Lorenz said in a release.

Fire officials notified the U.S. Coast Guard and initiated a search on the water, along with several boats from the fire department. A simultaneous search along the immediate coastline was conducted by fire and police personnel, and the fire department's SCUBA dive team "prepared for deployment, if needed," Lorenz said.
The man's kayak was located along the shore, and fishing poles and a backpack were located in the water, Lorenz said.
Castillo was ultimately located in the water by firefighters searching the rocky shoreline, Lorenz said. He was removed from the water around 12:40 p.m. by firefighters in cold-water exposure suits and they attempted CPR.
Both the man and the woman were taken to Stamford Hospital.
DEEP said Castillo "later died" after being located by Stamford fire officials. DEEP is currently investigating the incident.
