STAMFORD, CT — A man was in "grave" condition after his canoe capsized Tuesday morning in Stamford Harbor, according to police.

Capt. Richard Conklin said police received a call about the capsized canoe around 8:30 a.m.

According to Conklin, a neighbor on Ocean Drive spotted the man in the water and jumped in to help him. The neighbor reached the boater and pulled him to shore and perform CPR, Conklin said.

"It appeared they had lost him for a while," Conklin said. "Last I heard, they [detected] a slight pulse."

The man appears to have been living on a sailboat and used the canoe to go back and forth between the sailboat and the shore, Conklin said. It appears he was heading from the sailboat to the shore at the time, and the breezy weather was a factor in the canoe capsizing, Conklin said.

Conklin said the man was in "grave" condition as of Tuesday afternoon. Further information about the man has not been released by police.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is handling the investigation and Stamford police are assisting, Conklin said.
