Police said a man tried to enter Davenport Elementary School last Friday, which caused the school to go on lockdown.

STAMFORD, CT — A North Carolina man was arrested last Friday after police said he tried to enter Davenport Elementary School.
Jamar Mikel Edwards, 31, was charged with first-degree criminal trespass, according to a news release from the Stamford Police Department.
At approximately 1:03 p.m. on May 27, school administrators from Davenport Elementary on Newfield Avenue noticed a suspicious man on the school's campus, and the school immediately initiated a lockdown, police said.

SPD patrol units arrived at the school within three minutes and detained a man later identified as Edwards. School administrators told police Edwards exited a CT Transit bus and walked towards the school; CT Transit uses the school's driveway as a turnaround, police said.
Police said Edwards appeared disoriented, and attempted to open the front door but it was locked. Edwards rang the buzzer and spoke to office staff, and said he had keys to drop off and that he was looking for a job, according to police, noting that at no point was Edwards let in to the school.

Edwards, a North Carolina resident, has a pending case with the Connecticut State Police from an arrest on I-95 on May 25, police said. Due to his confused mental state, Edwards was taken to Stamford Hospital for a mental health evaluation before he was formally arrested, police said.
Police said they're looking into why Edwards was on school grounds.
